The Master (Paul Thomas Anderson - 2012)

On this day I watched The Master on blu-ray. I hadn't seen it before, and truth be told I had been avoiding it even though it was high on my list of "I really need to watch that" movies. And then I didn't write about it here at first because... what coherent, intelligent thing can I say about this movie? It seared itself into my imagination, resurfacing in pieces the following days. This is cinema in the best sense of the word, and though it made me quite uncomfortable, it moved me. Not just visually stunning (though it is), every image matters to the story psychologically, almost like a graphic novel in which the action doesn't make a whole lot of sense, like in a lucid dream, but is underpinned by a very real sense of loss.
